Being Doers

In my past updates, I’ve shared how we are seeking to do life together—from launching the weekly Voices of St. James’s to beginning the vital work of “getting the house ready” so our historic campus can continue to be a sanctuary for all.

As we strengthen our communication and care for our physical home, we must also tend to the very soul of who we are. To get the house ready, we must prepare our hearts.

At the beginning of 2026, we embarked on a holy, collective endeavor to do just that. Alongside the Vestry, our dedicated staff, and so many of you who gathered with us during adult forum, we reflected on who St. James’s has been, who we are today, and who God is calling us to be.

The energy as we gathered was palpable. There was laughter, deep theological wrestling, and a profound sense of gratitude for the rich history that anchors us to this place. Out of those sacred conversations, beautiful clarity emerged. We realized that while our programs shift and seasons change—the core of our identity remains distinct.

These are not just words on a page—they are a roadmap for our communal life. They are the scaffolding upon which we will build our ministries, deepen our formation, and stretch our arms out wide to the neighborhood we call home.

You may have seen in other posts and across our social media that we are living into this clarity that I hope is memorable and easy to share. I will become a broken record in reminding us of the ways in which our call is to Be with God | Be with One Another | Be with the World.

I cannot begin to express how energized I am by this clarity. There is a magnificent horizon ahead of us. Armed with a renewed sense of commitment, we can step into the 2026-27 program year not just with curiosity, but with a vibrant, celebratory anticipation of what God is up to in our midst.

In the weeks and months to come, you will see these pillars come to life in our worship, formation, fellowship, missions, outreach, and stewardship. You will continue to hear voices from across our community share how they are living out these commitments in their daily lives.

This is an invitation to each and every one of you. Whether you have walked through these doors for fifty years or are still trying to find where the coffee is served on Sunday mornings, you are an indispensable part of this story.

Thank you for your vulnerability in reflection, your steadfast commitment to our shared calling, and the love you pour into this parish. Let us step forward together— with intentions to be faithful, live in community, and embody generosity—to see where the Holy Spirit leads us next.
